And what a month to celebrate, create and reflect! Amongst renal physiology, growth and development and exams, there is sunshine. And after internal, surgery, ophthalmology, don’t worry friend, graduation looms.
This is that last AAA Inspiration Injection I’ll personally be sending, and I’m dedicating it to my wonderful 4th year colleagues.
Here she be:
1. An end? A beginning? Graduation: what does it mean to you? (I know, it’s complicated... but how cool to take a bit of time to reflect on this crazy experience).
2. What stands out over the last 4 years for you? Surely there have been many, let’s capture those moments.
3. Medicine is part of our lives, a big part yes, but not all of it. Feel free to reflect on life, loss, love, laughs.
Keep staying awesome and creative friends.

There are lots of reasons to use art to enhance and reflect on the experience as a medical student and clerk. It's not time consuming, a great complement to our education and ... fun!
Thanks as well to our terrific submissions to the Writing Competition. Stay tuned for the winners, though we are impressed by the enthusiasm in general.
Keep on inspiring!

D&C.
Such a simple sounding thing.
If it were C&D,
We might add it to our alphabet song.
Arrange soft & sauced alphagetti,
Or lettered sugar sweet breakfast,
But pasta nor cereal
Comes up or goes down
During a D&C.
The heartbeat was hard to find.
Clinic, emerge.
I thought I could find it -
Ultrasound usually does.
A quiver, confirmed by your doc,
Maybe it’s there?
Another U/S just down the hall.
“Anisarca”, the tech said.
As the patient and husband,
Waited in darkened room,
Tissue-less and worried.
It made me think of CSI:
The classic river scene.
13 weeks.
Doesn’t add to 17.
Reality and math uncorrelative,
But somehow add to demise.
We’re sorry.
The words clash with somber silence,
Like fetus inside.
With 4 weeks of questions.
Hovering in thick air.
Ultrasound equipment heat hums.
Next steps discussed -
We feel better in concrete.
Tomorrow is now: consult, hospital PJ’s, OR.
Quiet good mornings.
Anesthesia comforts.
In lithotomy, blood drips, tissue recovered.
That two lettered procedure,
Remove all of 13.
But maybe not all of 17.
My eye quivers, I sweat, step back
Find focus on green sheets, feet in air,
And finally sit.
Physiology meets reality,
Adrenaline reacts to tragedy.
As I sit, I think of gratitude:
I thank my body and mind,
For holding onto empathy,
And hope that hers does so too
Finding somehow after Propofol,
Comfort, patience and hope.

I just finished this poem after a rather frustrating period of feeling overly self-absorbed and subsequently finding myself in a less than compassionate space.
I watch you hang up. Slowly.
You’ve just finished confirming it again:
“I’ll see you tomorrow. 8:30.”
But tomorrow, I note, is Saturday.
I’ve just double checked to make sure,
Forever doubting my ability to pass an MMSE.
The clinic I note is closed tomorrow.
After ringing the pharmacy,
Speaking of glucometer, dehydration,
And then recalling the wife, presumably,
You explain: gentleman, prostate,
Cancer, palliative. Glucose 36.0.
Wants to die at home,
Why, wouldn’t you?
More about principles, oath than
Details of insulin regime, or lunch time.
Or match.
Through listening, reassuring,
Offering time, space and touch.
Of humility, the community family physician.
One patient, or rather fellow human.
Whose concerns turn ours.
Tomorrow at 8:30 comes and goes,
For me, I was skiing or maybe sleeping in.
But as I sit to write, reflect and ponder.
I too hope I’ll find the time and space,
To care. Even on Saturdays.

“What the heck are those black animals doing freestyle?”
Its being more accustomed to tanked, oxygenated
deep divers.
Above and below surface,
It explores.
It questions.
Flips and turns, bubbles and bobs.
Dynamic question marks,
Inn-acted with fins.
Through the waves,
While certainly less silky and smooth,
I ponder. I think about answers.
About CaRMS, about life.
And yet a world fascinating surrounds:
Snow blends to ocean,
A seal’s curious presence present.
And so we swim by,
Knowing our route return.
The 1-2-3 breathe constancy.
While depths textures, out of grasp.
Remain.
Amidst unacknowledged unknown.
Multitude.

This isn't art-fully presented (yet perhaps), but a sketch of some memories I want to remember that are quickly fading.
The narrative of 3 weeks.
Reflected.
Of meeting new friends,
Some recognized from the big screen,
Or from cities in our collective past,
Mere few days or few flights back.
Site visits at local gluten-free cafes,
Calls with Directors on ferries,
Patient and enthusiastic.
Resident smiles at socials,
Answer tough questions.
Interviews surprising,
Even the “operation game” a station.
Programs stacked with passionate physicians:
Family Doctors in community, collectives.
The changes: wearing a broach,
Using a wheeling suitcase,
In weather bingo of sun wind and snow.
Ultimately decisions complex.
A rank ignores the lived experience.
Planes, trains, automobiles,
Of ferries, of family, of friends in toe.
And now remembering the narrative,
It layers roughens entangles,
A process. Deliberation.
The privilege, a choice. Called CaRMS.

Off grass stalks straight,
Cedar hedges scaled wild.
And context -
The here now why how.
How narrative weaves
The text of texture, context.
The lightness, darkness, in between,
Gives voice to both.
Or rather all.
The here now why how.
Those stories and feelings,
Reflecting more.
As days lengthen,
Grass quickens,
Cedars continue to add history,
The here how, why now?

My boyfriend wrote me a little poem while I've been away, reassuring me while I face growing indecision and anxiety in these weeks on the CaRMS tour. Besides the silly inside jokes, I thought it was sweet enough to share. His more serious work can be found here (http://projectarctic.com).
Morning Note
We will land on our four collective feet
Twelve if you count landing with the cats
9 + 9 + you + me, twenty lives collectively
Keeping still won't keep us warm
We share the pleasures with the pain
Our heart is home for us both
Look we even have a moat (I like boat)
...Stay focused Gemini!
We are at the starting gate
With no one else in the run
We could tea at high noon
Or sleep until one.
Take my hand and let's do life together, now and forever.

My texts sit upon my friends’ bookshelf
The knowledge is there
Though living on the road this year has me wondering
Where did I put it?
It’s these moments of booking flights,
Researching far off communities and programs,
Preparing for random CaRMS interview questions,
That I wonder what 2014 will have in store.
I went to my temporarily new local library last week,
Unsure if I felt like fiction, or not,
Searched “uncertainty” in the catalogue.
Alas, they were all out.
